Bio

(B. 1986, in Egypt)

Amr Hamid is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, researcher, and writer working across Sweden and Egypt.

His practice spans drawing, text, sound, and experimental media, exploring how archives, technology, and cultural memory shape human experience. His work sits at the intersection of artistic practice and critical inquiry, merging research, philosophical thought, and humor to challenge dominant narratives and recover perspectives that official histories tend to leave out.

In 2016, he founded the Egyptian Cassette Archive, a research initiative documenting Egyptian cassette music and cover art while recovering the designers, calligraphers, and photographers behind them. What began as a single project has since grown into the Egyptian Cultural Heritage Archive, a research institution formally established in 2026, comprising six interconnected collections and over 10,000 physical items, dedicated to documenting the popular visual and material culture of Egypt that formal heritage frameworks have never recorded.

In 2019, he co-founded Flat Octopus, an international artist-run collective based in Stockholm, which curates exhibitions and fosters critical dialogue within the contemporary art scene. In 2025, he joined the board of Konsthall C, contributing to institutional governance and cultural leadership.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including at CairoTronica and SOMA Art Gallery in Cairo, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, and the Youth Salon at the Palace of Arts, Cairo. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Helwan University, Cairo, 2009.
